Shedding Light Moments

Shedding Light Moment 10th May 2021.
(Luke 5:1-11).
Simon Peter’s obedience is remarkable. His willingness to trust Jesus was rewarded. Not only did he catch a large number of fish, He gained a much deeper understanding of who Jesus is. He moved from calling Jesus “Master” in v.5 to calling Him “Lord” in v.8.
Perhaps God is calling you to “let down your nets again”. May we reply to the Lord as Simon did: “Because You say so I will”. So ponder this SLM.
“Our obedience to God will guide us through the unknown and draw us closer to Him”

(Psalm 98).
Verse one of Psalm 98 tells us why we should worship joyfully, reminding us that “(God) has done marvellous things”: God’s faithfulness and justice to all nations,His mercy, and salvation.
Dwelling on who God is and what He’s done can fill our hearts with praise. So take this moment to reflect on the marvellous things He has done in your life and give thanks. Lift your voice and sing! and then ponder this SLM.
“Worship takes the focus off us and places it where it belongs–on God.”

(Psalm 145:1-16).
The wonderful principle of God’s grace is that He is in the business of restoring failures. That’s why I love the comfort of Psalm 145, which speaks of God’s “wonderful works” in vv.5-6 and His glorious kingdom in v.11. It tells of His compassion in vv.8-9 and His faithfulness in v.13 and then immediately tells us that He lifts up those who have fallen in v.14. All His attributes are expressed when He picks us up. He is indeed in the business of restoration. The world may embrace success but all who have failed and have been redeemed are stories of God’s grace. So ponder this SLM.
“Our stories of failure can be God’s stories of success”.

(Mark 12:38-44)
Although the widow’s story focuses on her financial offerings, every act of giving can be an expression of worship and loving obedience. Like the widow, we honour God with intentional, generous, and sacrificial gifts given from whatever He’s already given us. When we present God the best of our time, talents or treasure with hearts motivated by love, we are lavishing Him with offerings of priceless worship.
So ponder this SLM.
“Sacrificial offerings motivated by our love for God will always be priceless expressions of worship”.

Shedding Light Moment 26th April 2021.
(Heb 11:1-8)
Sometimes life can get clouded over by a heavy fog of despair and we can tend to lose hope. But just as the sun burns away fog, our faith in God can burn away the haze of doubt. Verse 1 of Hebrews 11 clearly defines faith. Both Noah in v.7 and Abraham in v.8 obeyed God though not “seeing” or not “knowing” the immediate outcome of their faith.
Though we have not seen God and cannot always feel His presence, God is always present and will help us through our darkest heights. So ponder this SLM.
“Faith is the radar that sees through the fog”.

(Psa. 33:1-11)
In Psalm 32, David celebrated the marvel of God’s forgiveness, His guidance and concern for us. Unlike a human father, God knows every detail of our lives and the deepest needs of our hearts. The promise of verse 8 is indeed most encouraging.
Whatever our circumstances today, we can rely on God’s presence and care because “the Lord’s unfailing love surrounds the one who trusts in Him”(v.10).
So ponder this SLM.
“We are never out of God’s sight and His loving care”.

Shedding Light Moment 30th April 2021.
(Col 4:7-18).
In the body of Christ there are often people that faithfully support others who take a more public role. Paul’s ministry depended on and could not have been possible without the support he received from these fellow servants in Christ. See vv.7-18.
We may not always have highly visible roles, yet we know that God is pleased when we obediently play our essential part in His plan.
When we “give ourselves fully to the work of the Lord” (1Cor 15:58), we will find value and meaning in our service as it brings glory to God and draws others to Him. See (Matt 5:16).
Why not ponder this SLM.
“The secret of true service is being absolutely faithful wherever God places you”.

Shedding Light Moment 19th April 2021.
(Matt 18:23-35)
In Matthew 18, Jesus compares the kingdom of heaven to a king who decided to settle his accounts. The passage also deals with an unforgiving spirit.
Choosing to forgive doesn’t condone sin, or excuse the wrongs done to us, or even minimise our hurts. Offering forgiveness simply frees us to enjoy God’s undeserved gift of mercy, as we invite Him to accomplish beautiful works of peace-restoring grace in our lives and relationships.
So here’s a SLM to ponder:-
“Forgiving others expresses our trust in God’s right to judge according to His perfection and goodness”.

Shedding Light Moment 21st April 2021.
(1John 1:1-10)
To “walk in the light”is a metaphor for following Jesus. Imitating Jesus with the Spirit’s help, John insists, is a sign that we have joined with the apostles in the fellowship of faith. We are authentic Christians. But, He continues, let’s not be deceived: We will make wrong choices at times. In spite of that, grace is given in full measure: We can take what forgiveness we need.
Not perfect; just forgiven by Jesus! That’s the good word and SLM for today:-
“Monitor your heart daily to avoid wandering from God’s wisdom.

(Rom 1:18-25)
The Apostle Paul suggested that creation at it best reveals something of God’s nature. See v.20.
Both Ezekiel and John saw God’s beauty (Ez.1:25-28 & Rev.4:2-3). When God reveals Himself, He is found to be not only good and powerful but beautiful too. Creation reflects this beauty as art reflects its artist.
Nature often gets worshipped instead of God, see Rom 1:20. What a tragedy. Instead, may earth’s crystal waters and shimmering creatures point us to the One standing behind them who is more powerful and beautiful than anything in this world. So ponder this SLM.
“The beauty of creation reflects the beauty of our Creator.

Shedding Light Moment 12th April 2021.
(James 1:1-12)
For many trees, new growth is made possible by the devastation of a natural disaster. James writes that our growth in faith is also made possible by our difficulties. See verses 2-4.
It’s difficult to be joyful during trials, but we can take hope from the fact that God will use them to help us reach maturity. Like trees, faith can grow in times of trial when difficulty clears space in our hearts for the light of God to touch us.
So here’s a SLM to start the week.
“Trials and tests can draw us closer to God”

Shedding Light Moment 14th April 2021.
(Jer 29:4-14).
In Old Testament days when God sent the people of Israel into exile in Babylon, He told them to serve Him in that foreign land and grow in faith until He brought them back home. See verse 11.
God urged them not to ignore or to be trapped by events of the past but instead to focus on Him and look ahead. The Lord’s forgiveness can transform the memory of our sorrow into great confidence in His everlasting love. So here’s another SLM to ponder.
“God can use our deepest disappointments to nurture our faith in Him”.

Shedding Light Moment 16th April 2021.
(Psa 119:33-40)
Verses 36-37 of today’s reading are particularly worth noting. So may I suggest reading God’s Word for 15 minutes a day. That adds up to 91 hours a year. But for whatever amount you decide to read each day, consistency is the secret and the key ingredient is not perfection but persistence. As you read, you’ll find, God’s Word moves from our minds to our hearts, then to our hands and feet, taking us beyond education to transformation.
“Teach me,Lord, the way of your decrees, that I may follow it to the end” (v.33). Ponder this SLM:-
“The Bible is the only Book whose Author is always present when it is read.”
